1975 - June 16, Denmark: Second Preliminary Meeting for World Indigenous Conference (WCIP) in Copenhagen, Denmark

The Second Preliminary Meeting for the World Council of Indigenous Peoples (WCIP) was held in June 1975 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The meeting largely focused on who would take part in the 1977 General Assembly in Sweden and how it would be paid for. The meeting was hosted by a group called the International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA), made up of anthropologists in Denmark. IWGIA gave the first funding, along with the governments of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Christian churches also helped with funds, thanks to a Métis Catholic priest named Guy Lavallée. Right before the big founding meeting in British Columbia’s Port Alberni, the Canadian government also gave a large donation through its Department of External Affairs.
