1981 - April 26, Japan: First Ainu Participation in the World Council of Indigenous Peoples’ (WCIP) Third General Assembly in Canberra, Australia

At the 1977 WCIP General Assembly, Indigenous Australian delegates began plans to start a Pacific branch of the group. By the next meeting in 1981, they had made contact with Indigenous peoples across Asia and the Pacific. That year, activist Narita Tokuhei became the first Ainu delegate to attend, joining representatives from Thailand and India.
