Ty Bryant, from Vancouver, BC, is an incoming Anthropology MA student at Simon Fraser University. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (First Class with Distinction) at Simon Fraser University. Ty’s upcoming MA thesis, under the guidance of Dr. Michael Hathaway, will examine Chinese-Indigenous affinities through ethnographic fieldwork with Chinese immigrants. As an Indigenous person (We Wai Kai First Nation) with Chinese relations, he finds it crucial to highlight the shared history and reciprocity that defines Chinese-Indigenous ties in British Columbia.

Ty asks: given their unique subject position within the settler state, how do Chinese immigrants in British Columbia conceptualize and relate to settler colonialism? In what ways do Chinese and Indigenous perspectives on settler colonialism intersect or diverge? The project is aligned with recent calls to move beyond the Native/settler binary that has dominated settler colonial studies.
