In 1974, a delegation of Ainu travelled from Japan to China. This was one of the first international trips made by an Ainu delegation in modern history. This group, made up of members from many different communities, was actively questioning their own difficult situation in Japan as Ainu people. In China, they encountered many people and institutions that showed them a very different way of organizing society. Returning to Japan, a number of the delegates began an unprecedented series of actions.
